The Biblioteca de Catalunya has been housed in the Antic Hospital de la Santa Creu since 1939—one of the most important Gothic ensembles in Catalunya. Built between the 15th and 17th centuries, it was the largest hospital in Catalunya for centuries.

The Palau has pure Gothic, flamboyant Gothic, Renaissance and baroque elements behind the neoclassical façade. The building was constructed between the 15th and mid-17th centuries, which accounts for the variety of architectural styles.
