Located inside the current Santa Caterina market, the Espacio Santa Caterina. Archaeological Interpretation Center summarizes some of the fundamental facts of the history of Barcelona from the Bronze Age to the latest manifestations of contemporary architecture.
In the 13th century, the Dominican convent of Santa Caterina was erected, the first seat of the city's Consell de Cent. In 1835 it was demolished—despite its indisputable artistic value—and became the second market in Barcelona.
With the creation of this space, it is intended to publicize the evolution of this sector of the city from prehistory to the present day, especially highlighting the different stages of the Dominican convent of the same name, which was in operation between the 13th and 19th centuries, without forget its market stage and its recent reform, which has been one of the most successful examples of contemporary architecture in Barcelona.
