Going to the doctor because you are experiencing chest pains or have a sore throat is second nature, but when it comes to seeking professional care for our mental well-being, our actions are dramatically different. In fact, most people don’t seek help, choosing instead to bury their problems because of the stigma that surrounds discussing mental health issues.
Yet the reality is, mental health problems don’t just disappear. The World Health Organization reports that one in four people currently suffer from mental health conditions, placing mental disorders among the leading causes of poor health and disability worldwide.
To explore this issue, we spoke to Gestalt Therapist Emma Ruiz and Associate Certified Coach Goldie Uttamchandani to discuss the stigma that surrounds the conversation of mental health and the best ways to address it. They shared with us some of the great work they do with the expat community in Barcelona, talked about the essence of communicating our thoughts and discussed the various resources for mental well-being that are accessible in Barcelona.
