Yana-Wara, Óscar Catacora (Peru, 2023)
The communal justice system accuses Don Evaristo, 80 years old, for the murder of his granddaughter Yana-Wara, 13 years old. During the hearing, everyone learns the tragic story of this young girl, who, because of gender violence, begins to have terrifying visions after being touched by the evil spirits that inhabit the forbidden places of the Andes.
Co-diected by Peruvian filmmakers Óscar Catacora and Tito Catacora, Catacora died early in the film’s production aged just 34. He had previously directed Wiñaypacha (Eternity) in 2017, the first Peruvian film shot entirely in Aymara, a language native of the Andes. The film won best first film and best cinematography at the Guadalajara film festival in Mexico and went on to be Peru’s Oscar entry film.
For Catacora, Yana-Wara was a chance to explore “the duality in Andean culture: evil and good spirits, and to focus on the topic of violence against women as well as the respect for nature, so lacking in western culture.”
Film will be screened in original version with subtitles in Spanish.
A film in the 2024 edition of IndieFest, Barcelona Indigenous Film Festival.
