Verdi’s "La Traviata"
to
Palau de la Música Catalana Carrer Palau de la Música 4-6, 08003 Barcelona
Featuring one of the most iconic, romantic and tragic scores of all time, Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece contrasts spectacular party scenes with tender, intimate moments.
One of Verdi’s most popular operas, La Traviata portrays the semi-autobiographical tale of The Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas fils. It tells the story of the tragic love between Violetta, a high-society Parisian courtesan, and the romantic Alfredo Germont. Played out against the hypocrisy of upper-class fashionable society, Alfredo and Violetta’s love threatens to shame his family. When his father directly appeals to Violetta to relinquish her one chance of happiness, Violetta submits and her act of self-sacrifice leads to her paying the ultimate price. Through the melodramatic themes of love and death, the performance transports viewers back to the 19th century, casting a socialist perspective on class systems and bourgeois double standards.
La Traviata is one of the most performed and acclaimed operas around the world, including fragments so bright and known as the duet Brindisi, the spectacular aria-cabaletta of Violetta Sempre Libera and the touching final Addio del passato.
