The Sea: A Global Common Good

Tundi Agardy, marine conservationist and founder of Sound Seas, and Júlia López Ventura, European Director of C40 Cities, will speak about the importance of conserving coastal regions around the globe, and the complexity of global management of these environments that are so essential for well-balanced human societies.
Although coastal zones cover a small fraction of the earth’s surface, they are presently home to almost 50% of the world’s population, most of which lives in urban areas. These seafront cities are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change owing to the impact of rising sea levels and extreme weather events. Indeed, 10% of the world’s population resides in urban areas that are less than 10 metres above sea level and therefore very vulnerable to flooding. In addition to the effects of climate change, the pressures of the tourist industry in many of these regions and deterioration of coastal biodiversity, which offers essential resources to millions of people, must also be taken into account.
This is the opening event of Cities and Sea, which is part of the Cultural Regatta, a program of activities promoted by the Barcelona City Council on the occasion of the holding of the Americas Cup in the city.
The event will be hosted in Catalan and English, with a simultaneous translation from English to Catalan.
