Coming from the Irish city of Mullingar, The Academic is an indie rock band that achieved success in their native country after a series of singles characterized by their unmistakable melodies from the group's debut album, Tales from the Backseat, which topped the Irish charts in 2018. Their rapid rise soon landed them a contract with Universal with whom they released their second album in 2023, Sitting Pretty.
Formed when the group's members were still teenagers, The Academic became known after opening a concert for the Pixies, allowing them to amass a large regional following. After signing to Global Publishing in late 2014, they released the songs "Different" and "Northern Boy," which were later included on their 2015 debut EP, Loose Friends. The 2016 summer single "Mixtape 2003" reaffirmed their hooky guitar pop sound which continued to take a slight turn towards dream pop with "Superlike" and "Aftertaste" in 2019 only to return to their signature style with the release of their second studio album.
