Searching for the Disappeared Hour is the second duet album by Swiss pianist Sylvie Courvoisier and American guitarist Mary Halvorson.
They don't make what you'd call easy or commercial music, and both tend to live off the radar of less curious fans and press. But whoever knows them knows for sure that this is one of the little big events of the Voll-Damm Jazz Festival this year.
Their first album, Crop Circles, was born after a concert at the Cornelia Street Café. Searching for the Disappeared Hour is the result of dozens of concerts and hours of music by these two improvisers who have made piano and guitar speak in an unusual way. "I think this record is more developed than the first one," Courvoisier explained, "When I write for Mary, I think a lot about the possibilities of the guitar. Her music has beautiful tonalities, beautiful melodies and a very clear sense of harmony, and I like to give it a bit of darkness.
“We both like to darken things,” Halvorson added humorously, “which suits us very well because you can start with a happy tune and then you have all kinds of possibilities to muddy it up…”
Enjoy the duo of these two women who improvise to create sounds like none ever heard before.
