Petite maman, Celine Sciamma (2021, France)
Nelly is eight years old and has just lost her grandmother. While helping her parents, she explores the area around the home where her mother, Marion, used to play when she was small. There she discovers the tree house she had heard so much about. One day, her mother suddenly leaves. That is when Nelly meets another girl her own age in the forest and together they build a house up in the tree. Her new friend is called Marion.
Born in the suburbs of Paris, Sciamma began to study courses on screenwriting at the La Femis film school after graduating in French literature. Naissance des pieuvres (2007, released in English as Water Lilies), her first feature-length film, was selected for the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival and won the Louis Delluc Prize for Best First Film. Tomboy (2011), her second film, premiered in the Panorama section of the Berlin International Film Festival and Bande de filles (Girlhood) opened the Directors' Fortnight at Cannes in 2014. Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (Portrait of a Young Lady on Fire) won Best Screenplay at Cannes. Petite maman won the Audience Award in Berlin and at the San Sebastián International Film Festival.
