Porgy and Bess is a unique American opera and a masterful fusion of classical music, jazz and popular music. It first premiered in 1935 and has since been hailed as an iconic and timeless work that reflects diversity and human passions. The story is set in Catfish Row, a neighborhood in South Carolina, a vibrant world, full of life and deep emotions.
The opera also boasts an array of characters, such as the eponymous Porgy, a disabled man struggling to find love and dignity, and Bess, a woman trapped in a world of conflict and temptation. With songs like “Summertime,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So” and “I Got Plenty o' Nuttin'” performed with virtuosity and under the improvisatory paradigm of Marc Mezquida, this experience will be a true celebration of Gershwin's genius.
