Caprice, Joanna Hogg (United Kingdom, 1986)
Orlando, Sally Potter (United Kingdom, 1992)
The winner of the National Cinematography Award, Carla Simón, gives a talk about the concept of transformation and power in her films Caprice and Orlando. Both explore the desperate struggle of many women to be accepted by general society by showing two cases where pressure is placed on the protagonists on women to behave in a certain way.
In Caprice we see Lucky, a young woman who is swallowed by the pages of her favorite fashion magazine. She will enter a dream world that will be a fascinating and terrifying experience all at once.
In Orlando, Tilda Swinton plays the protagonist. She is a melancholic and independent creature with an ambiguous and immortal being who, with the passing of the centuries, evolves from man to woman, while investigating the mysteries of life, art and sexual passion.
The session will be preceded by a filmed introduction by Carla Simón who will talk about the reasons that have led her to put these two projections in dialogue, as well as the work of Virginia Wolf titled Orlando, and the pressures and the collective imaginaries about female bodies through the work of Johanna Hogg.
