A concert by Nduduzo Makhathini, they say, goes far beyond music: it is a sound journey towards ancestors, the past, a kind of "spiritual conversation beyond the limits of time," Noah Sparks, Treble.
Makhathini has a very special, indefinable aura. It is difficult to be next to him and not smile, relieved of all the weights that surround us; it is very difficult to listen to him live and not experience a kind of invitation to calm and joyful reflection. Considered a philosopher and a healer, Makhathini will once again dazzle listeners with the presentation of his new trio album, uNomkhubulwane. An album that is a suite divided into three parts that pays homage to the Zulu goddess who gives the record its name, and that explores—says the Blue Note press release—"the tragic history of oppression in Africa." It is also accompanied by an ideal rhythm section: Zwelakhe-Duma Bell le Pere on double bass and Cuban Francisco Mela on drums. "Makhathini's music," concludes the promotional note, "is both an offering and an invitation to humanity to cultivate ways of being that fight for freedom and balance."
