Muerte y maravillas, Diego Soto (Chile, 2023)

The summer after finishing school, a group of teenagers decide to visit their friend Fuenza, who has been fighting a serious illness for several years. During the visit, Fuenza lends Juan Pablo a book of poems and the next day he seems to suddenly improve.

However, the group does not know that they are sharing their last days with him, as he dies shortly after. Juan Pablo, to cope with his grief, begins to write poetry, and Fuenza, in order to rest in peace, asks him to take all the books from his house to his own home.

The most independent film of the 2024 LATcinema Fest program is the Chilean Muerte y maravillas by Diego Soto—a title with a clear reference to the work of the Chilean poet Jorge Tellier. With only 1,000 euros, Soto and the film team put together a deeply sensitive hybrid film between fiction and documentary that opens a window to a group of young friends who are experiencing deep grief as they try to find their way along the path to adulthood.

The film will be screened in its original version, in Spanish.
