The Beyond the Images exhibition focuses on Henri Matisse and Joan Miró, highlighting the similarities and connections between the two artists, well as their contrasting style and school of thought.
The exhibition begins with biographical questions: How did Matisse and Miró access each other's work? What did they see or could they see in each other? Who were the people who facilitated this contact? From there, the exhibition will focus on decisive moments in which these exchanges of views were particularly productive: Miró's Fauvism in the late 1910s and early 1940s, and the stimulus that Miró's works transmitted to Matisse from the mid-1930s onwards. It will aim to show the deep, lasting and constructive relationships between the two artists, their conceptions of art and their works.
Beyond Images also factors in that both artists based their work on a profound critique of the tradition of images in the West. Their broad conception of painting and drawing practices was driven by this critical concern, as well as questions of form, function, color, symbolism, and human interpretation.
