Los corceles de fuego, Sergeï Paradjanov (Soviet Union, 1965)
José Luis Guerin presents us with the idea of "Landscapes of the Spirit" in this film from the film series El Paisaje Filmico.
Soviet musician, painter and filmmaker of Armenian origin, Sergeï Paradjanov, gradually moves away from hegemonic socialist realism to develop a poetic work closely linked to the traditions of the regions where he films. Despite initial resistance from the Soviet authorities, the film was shot and broadcast in Hutsul, the variant of Ukrainian spoken in the villages of the eastern Carpathians. Paradjanov is based on an ethnographic novel by Mikhaylo Kotsyubinsky that narrates the tragic loves of Ivan and Marichka, belonging to feuding families. However, the Hutsul traditions themselves, their peasant rites, their beliefs and legends prevail in the first instance.
This screening will be accompanied by an introductory video by the film director and screenwriter José Luis Guerin, where he will explain the reason for his selection and the relationship established between cinema and landscape in this film and theme.
The film will be screened in its original language.
