Leslie Feist is undoubtedly one of the most influential singer-songwriters of her generation. Throughout her career she has won 11 Juno Awards in her native Canada and she has been internationally nominated for numerous Grammys and Brits.
After a hiatus of almost six years since Pleasures (2017), she has returned with Multitudes (2023). While some early hits in her career like "1234," "Mushaboom" and "I Feel It All" were the perfect soundtrack to a carefree summer for fans around the world in the early and mid-2000s, this new work captures its author in a most moving and reflective moment of her life. Many of the songs on the new album explore a similar theme, particularly how the pandemic has prompted a reexamination of our home lives and closest relationships.
Multitudes is the sound of an artist who is still willing to explore new sound paths after making music for more than 20 years:
"This record was written, essentially, for a live show that we toured during the pandemic. I did an experiment in social theater that we staged with David Byrne's production designer (Rob Sinclair). It was round, we built it in Germany and we took it around North America. It had very limited capabilities. It was a dream I'd had for years, this experiment in egalitarian theater. It was the time when the world had room for it, that would allow such a non-commercial way of sharing the space with the public. The songs were largely written for that show. Basically, the pre-production of the record was done on tour."
