The term wind orchestra is a name used, particularly in other countries, but also here, as a synonym for concert band. Although there are few places with a tradition of wind instruments as deep-rooted as Spain, the concert band still has some negative connotations, borne out of prejudice and lack of understanding.

To acknowledge the important role of this ensemble and prove its relevance today, this program showcases three works from the 21st century.

The first is the premiere of a work by Pedro Ortiz, commissioned by the BMB from the composition class of the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC), with whom they have been collaborating for several years. The second features Sérgio Carolino as a tuba soloist in the concerto for his instrument composed by Jorge Salgueiro. The program closes with Symphony No. 9 by James Barnes, one of the great champions of concert band music. His last symphony, to date, draws on the deepest classical tradition.
