Rossini and Ferret's opera La Cenerentola is Charles Perrault's world-famous fable, Cinderella, with a twist: a Papal censorship forced him change the supposedly immoral original concept, so he put the classic fairytale to music instead. The opera replaces the stepmother with a stepfather, and the fairy godmother with a tutor. The magical and fabulous elements have been eliminated, and the story instead features elaborate disguises and mistaken identities.
Written in just 24 days, La Cenerentola is a whirlwind of Rossini's signature crescendos and humor. It's a delightful mix of sentimentality and buffoonery, with a surprisingly complex heroine. Emma Dante's production is delicate, full of subtle nuances, but yet also has a sombre and burlesque melancholy. The production of this opera promises to be veritable storm of great music, full of humor served up by the best Rossini singers of the moment. It’s a dramma giocoso replete with lessons for modern-day society.
