In 1993, L’Alternativa was the first festival in Barcelona to commit to auteur cinema. Since then, its programing has focused on a selection of films that reject conventional approaches and which are not included in more commercial events. This year the Barcelona Independent Film Festival, l'Alternativa, reaches its 31st edition. For three decades it's offered filmgoers and professionals a unique opportunity to discover and enjoy screenings and activities that value creative freedom, diversity, innovation, commitment and thought-provoking reflection.

Together with the different sections of short films and feature films, the festival offers the public and professionals a unique opportunity to enjoy activities that defend diversity, creativity and reflection from a more experimental and daring perspective.

Alongside the screenings, l'Alternativa Activities includes seminars, masterclasses, debates with creators, panel discussions, performances, creative workshops for children and grownups and Film School seminars. In addition, l'Alternativa Pro runs industry days, workshops, masterclasses, meetings and Cinema Pendent, which encompasses a series of activities to boost the development of independently produced films and audiovisual projects.

In 2024 the festival once again offers a hybrid edition: onsite screenings and activities and a selection of films available on Filmin.

Venues

Films and activities will be held at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA), Filmoteca de Catalunya, Zumzeig, Escola de Cinema de Barcelona and Cinema Maldà.
