Serizawa Keisuke was one of the great masters of 20th century Japanese textile design, and the first artist to be declared a Living National Treasure of Japan (1956), due to his contribution to the country in the field of kataezome printing.
Serizawa reinvigorated the art of textiles with unique, personal designs that made it possible to conserve and modernize this unique tradition without renouncing its roots; on the contrary, he used it as a model and a starting point to create art that would resonate for more than one generation.
Kataezome: The artistic legacy of Serizawa Keisuke aims to highlight this unique, unprecedented and important heritage, with a selection of pieces by Serizawa and his main disciples taken from historical collections in Catalonia, where one of the most significant bodies of work by the artist outside of Japan is held.
The Kataezome exhibit by artist Serizawa Keisuke can be viewed at the Museu Etnològic i Cultures del Món Montcada from June 16th through January 7th. In collaboration with: Japan Foundation, Shizuoka City Serizawa Keisuke Art Museum, and Tohoku Fukushi University Serizawa Keisuke Art and Craft Museum.
