Amazonia by Jan van Roost describes life around the largest river in the world: from the sacred relationship the indigenous people have with water to their first contact with “civilization," from initiation ceremonies to the struggle against the destruction of their habitat for commercial reasons.
The program features El Cor Canta, an association that brings together over a hundred amateur singers and organizes an international competition for composers each year. The most recent winner was Jordi Flaquer Forest with N’Elisenda de Montcada, based on a poem of the same name by Dolors Monserdà, which will be premiered in this concert.
Finally, the Barcelona Symphonic Band, with soprano María Hinojosa and the members of El Cor Canta, will perform the brilliant Magnificat by English composer John Rutter, a renowned specialist in religious choral music. This piece in seven movements alludes to the moment when the Virgin Mary learns she will give birth to Jesus.
