From the Border
to
CaixaForum Barcelona Av. de Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia 6-8, 08038 Barcelona
The border is the physical boundary that separates two states. It is a space for a mix of cultures and confrontations of ethnicity and nations.
There are historical and geographical boundaries, as well as cultural and intellectual. There are invisible borders in people's daily lives. Differences in skin color, ethnicity, gender, ideology and culture can lead to divisions and conflicts. But, in turn, they enable inspiration and creativity. The curator of the exhibition, Mei Huang, starts from this idea to explore borders, which in recent years have become more solid and rigid.
The exhibition brings together a set of works from the Collection of Contemporary Art Foundation La Caixa, and the MACBA collection. Artists Paulo Nazareth and Asier Mendizábal work with the idea of the flag, a banner of nationalism, while Nigel Henderson makes us reflect on the vagueness of geographical borders from an aerial photograph of World War II. The exhibition also incorporates works by Akram Zaatari, Vanessa Beecroft, Annette Messager, Pep Duran, Francesc Torres and Isidoro Valcárcel Medina.
