Like other places in Barcelona with their own neighborhood festivals, the Festa Major de Horta is organized by the neighborhood association. Neighborhood festivities in Barcelona are usually held in honor of a patron saint, and Horta's festival is celebrated in honor of Saint Gaudentius.
It was held for the first time in Horta on September 10, 1731 and since then, each year on September 10th, the town of Horta has held a ceremony in front of Sant Joan d'Horta parish church as just one part of this big festival.
The festival features activities of all kinds, including dances, concerts, children's activities, community meals, sporting events and gymnastics. The local culture of the neighborhood—rich and varied as it is—also plays an important role. All the neighborhood associations join together during the opening parade and a correfoc (fire run) closes it on the last day.
