"Building a problem" is a phrase from a song on Dodie's second studio album. When choosing the name of her second album, she found herself with a small problem since she already had a previous EP called Human. Since the songs she was writing for the new album followed a very similar idea; the flawed, emotionally erratic, wonderfully complex puzzle of what it means to be alive—and Human could never be used again.
But this line, from a song called "Hate Myself," seemed to have a similar concept; all those moments that happen to us in life that end up becoming those problems that we don't realize we have within ourselves until we look back and say: "Ah, that's where that comes from." Dodie, whose past continues to influence her present and future, explores all this and more on her musically ambitious second album called Build A Problem.
Dodie wrote most of the songs on the album in the last two years. "I think I was actually going through a crisis," she says now. "I was very unsure of who I was and I was trying to figure it out with music. So I think it's a pretty shaky album, but it's definitely honest."
