In the history of 20th century art, the figure of Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler (1884-1979) is a legend. Of German origin, he chose Paris to open his gallery in 1907, at 28 rue Vignon. The few exhibitions and presentations that he organized there until 1914 make him the pioneer art dealer of Cubism.
Promoter of Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, André Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck, and later of Juan Gris and Fernand Léger, Kahnweiler built from scratch an international network of cubist collectors, such as Hermann Rupf, Roger Dutilleul, Vincenc Kramar, Sergei Shchukin and Gertrude Stein, and surrounded himself with the best critics. Kahnweiler was also a man of letters who became a publisher to bring together, in exquisitely edited books, the poets and painters of the Cubist group.
This exhibition aims to show all aspects of the personality of this great man of the arts. From art dealer, to writer to editor. The exhibition is a chronological journey explained through the artworks from the Kahnweiler Galleries. It also touches on the tortured existence of Kahnweiler, having lived through two wars, and the importance of Picasso in his life.
