Bizet's Carmen
to
Palau de la Música Catalana Carrer Palau de la Música 4-6, 08003 Barcelona
Though Carmen was a flop when it was first staged and probably hastened George Bizet's death, it became a firm favorite with audiences throughout the world during the closing decades of the 19th century. The French composer based it on the novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée and his gypsy cigarette girl, with her indomitable sense of freedom and tragic fate, eventually attained immortality.
Bizet's Carmen is one of the most acclaimed operas in the world. Known in technical terms as repertoire opera, few thrill audiences like she does. Bizet's penetrating and seductive music is a combination of different styles that range from the most classic French romanticism to the most beautiful melodies inspired by Spanish folklore.
Staged version of two and a quarter hours with intermission. Symphony orchestra, soloists, choir, children's choir, costumes, lighting: more than 60 artists on stage!
