In 1925 the Gunadule successfully resisted the Panamanian government’s repression of their culture. In three days of fighting, they achieved their autonomy and thus saved their way of life. Known as the “Dule Revolution,” the glorious battle is commemorated annually with a reenactment involving hundreds of participants, including many children. Bila Burba shows the reenactment of the successful revolution and reviews with the revolutionaries’ descendants the reasons for the uprising and the course of events. The film convincingly shows the power of this community theater to maintain a unique collective identity, which emphasizes cooperation. Keeping the past alive is crucial, because the autonomy of the Gunadule is again threatened due to the sale of parts of their territory by the Panamanian government.
Film will be screened in original version with subtitles in Spanish and Catalan.
A film in the 2024 edition of IndieFest, Barcelona Indigenous Film Festival.
