The celebrated, much storied Bavarian company will open the 36th Castell de Peralada Festival with a double bill. The company was founded during the 1990-91 season as an independent department of the Bavarian State Opera and now has a wide repertoire that spans productions from classical ballet to modern dance.
Three great choreographers have assembled the program for the opening night of the Festival. First, With a Chance of Rain, an exuberant and expansive ballet by Liam Scarlett that creates a unique atmosphere as it deals magisterially with the relationship between music and dance through Rachmaninov’s Six Preludes. That is followed by Sharon Eyal’s Bedroom Folk with electronic music by Ori LichtiK, which speaks to us of the compulsion to submerge our identity in a group, of the loss of individuality through a choreography stuffed with abstraction of movement, but in which situations arise time and again. Finally, Rubies by George Balanhine with music by Igor Stravinsky. The centerpiece of the ballet Jewels premiered in 1967 (the first full-length abstract classical ballet) which radiates the glamour of Broadway. The choreography mixes elements of jazz dance with steps that would be at home in a musical theatre show, where huge jumps are mixed with brilliant, syncopated steps that are reminiscent of tap. Creativity, passion and perseverance. A night of ecstasy for lovers of dance.
