Film still from "Indignation" directed by James Schamus (USA, 2016) at the Barcelona Jewish Film Festival.
Barcelona’s Festival Cinema Jueu is one of the most anticipated events of its kind in Europe dedicated exclusively to celebrating the artistry and creativity of Jewish culture, which is itself inextricably bound to the city and to Spain.
Every year since 1999 the festival has delivered a new and diverse series of cinematic and artistic projects to the public. No stone is left unturned in this impressive collection, as a variety of genres and topics are explored in great depth: from documentaries and feature films to independent shorts and audiovisual pieces.
2024 Program
Highlights in the 2024 program include Günter Schwaiger's documentary Who Is Afraid of Hitler’s Town? (Austria, 2023) which relates the controversial story of the Führer's birthplace, how the town struggles with the weight of his legacy and what to do with the building he lived in as a toddler; Noé Debré's feature-length directorial debut Le Dernier des Juifs (France, 2023) a French comedy-drama about two Jews who are the last ones living in their neighborhood, and eerily seems almost to have predicted the rise in antisemitism in the wake of the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas; and James Schamus' directorial debut Indignation (USA, 2016), based on Philip Roth’s novel of the same name, takes place in 1951, telling the story of a working-class Jewish student from New Jersey who attends a small Ohio college where he struggles with sexual repression, cultural disaffection and the ongoing Korean War.
Films will be shown in original language, with Spanish or Catalan subtitles.
Films will be screened primarily at the Filmoteca de Catalunya with some screenings at the Institut Français in Barcelona as well as at the Cinema Truffaut in Girona.
