20.000 especies de abejas, Estibaliz Urresola (Spain, 2023)

This is the tender story of a transgender girl and the effect her identity has on her family. Eight-year-old Aitor struggles with her gender identity—she does not fit the expectations of others and does not understand why. Everyone around her calls her Aitor but she does not recognize herself in that name or in the eyes of others. Her mother Ane, plunged into a professional and sentimental crisis, will take advantage of the holidays to travel with her three children to the maternal home, where her mother Lita and her aunt Lourdes live, closely linked to the breeding of bees and the production of honey. This summer will change their lives and force these women from three very different generations to face their doubts and fears.

20.000 especies de abejas is a coming-of-age story that explores the relationship between body, gender, and identity from Lucia and her mother Ane’s point of view throughout the story. It is not just a film about a transgender child, but an inter-generational portrait about identity and acceptance in the family; about the construction of gender relationships; tradition and change; but above all about the need to be loved just as we are.

Film will be screened in original version (Spanish, Basque and French) with subtitles in Spanish.

Timing

Screenings will begin at sunset sometime between 21:30 and 22:00, which will vary depending on the date. All sessions are free of charge. You should plan to arrive early and enjoy a the music as you settle into your place. Keep in mind that food and chairs will not be provided, so make sure to pack something tasty and a blanket for a lovely beach picnic under the stars. You are encouraged to arrive early for a good seat close to the screen!
